What is Vitamin B-12?
Cobalamin is a common term for compounds with biologic vitamin B12 activity. These compounds are necessary for the maturation of red blood cells and the synthesis of the genetic material of cells.
Vitamin B12 is important for metabolism which includes the processes of energy generation and use.
B12 works along with another B vitamin called folic acid. Together they are involved with DNA synthesis, blood cell formation, maintenance of nervous system and heart health. Vitamin B12 is important in the body’s metabolism of protein, fat and carbohydrates.
Vitamin B12 absorption begins in the stomach, where it must combine with Intrinsic Factor, a compound secreted by the stomach and required for proper absorption of B12 in the small intestine.
Vitamin B12 converts homocysteine into a non-toxic compound. Homocysteine is a toxic substance that is formed during the metabolism of the amino acid methionine. Homocysteine levels in the blood are influenced by diet and genetic factors.
Elevated homocysteine is associated with increased risk of developing atherosclerosis, heart disease, stroke, osteoporosis and Alzheimer’s disease.  Supplementing with vitamins B12, B6 and Folic acid have the greatest effects on reducing the levels of this amino acid.

Sources of Vitamin B12
Vitamin B12 is found in foods that come from animals, including fish, shell fish, meat, liver, poultry, eggs, milk, and dairsy products.

Deficiency of vitamin B-12
Vitamin B12 deficiency may occur as a result of an inability to absorb this vitamin from food. Absorption of B12 requires intrinsic factor which is secreted from the cells lining the stomach. The B 12- intrinsic factor complex is then absorbed in the small intestine. Disruption of any of the mentioned steps will have an effect on B 12 absorption.
Insufficient production of intrinsic factor and stomach acid especially in the elderly is a common cause of vitamin B12 deficiency. Supplements are highly recommended to strict vegetarians who consume only plants.

B 6
Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) is required for the synthesis of the neurotransmitters serotonin and nor epinephrine. Vitamin B 6 also helps keep nerves, skin, red blood cells, and mucous membranes healthy. Vitamin B 6 is involved in variety of functions in our body;

  • Helps improve mood and increase energy
  • Needed for hemoglobin synthesis and red blood cell growth
  • Immune and nervous system function support
  • Improve arthritis pain
  • Helps reduce PMS symptoms
  • Recommended for carpal tunnel syndrome.
Major sources of vitamin B6 include: enriched cereal, vegetables (carrots, spinach, and peas), potatoes, milk, cheese, eggs, poultry, fish, liver, meat, and bananas.

Vitamin B6 deficiency can occur in individuals with poor diets that are deficient in many nutrients. Symptoms usually occur during later stages of deficiency. Signs of vitamin B6 deficiency include;
  • dermatitis (skin inflammation)
  • glossitis (a sore tongue)
  • depression
  • confusion
  • and convulsions
  • anemia
More than one million people take vitamin B6 it to fight stress and increase energy.

Supplementation with folic acid and vitamins B6 and B12 costs only pennies a day and yet it is indeed hard to imagine an investment that would pay greater dividends in protecting your health.

Folic Acid deficiency
Folic acid deficiency has been implicated in many different disorders from atherosclerosis to heart attack, stroke, osteoporosis, cervical and colon cancer, depression, dementia, Alzheimer's disease, hearing loss and neural tube defects. Folic acid deficiency can be due to;

  • Eating a diet deficient in folic acid (not enough raw leafy vegetables or citrus fruits). This may include elderly people eating a poor diet.
  • Under nutrition associated with alcoholism and drug addiction. (Excessive use of alcohol interferes with metabolism of folic acid).
  • Some drugs such as anti-epileptics and some antibiotics can interfere with the normal metabolism of folic acid.
  • Pregnant and lactating women should always check with their doctor before taking any kind of medication.
Biotin
Biotin is a B vitamin that converts our food into energy. Biotin is used in cell growth, fatty acids production, metabolism of fats, and amino acids .Biotin is also helpful in maintaining a steady blood sugar level. It is often recommended for strengthening hair and nails. Consequently, it is found in many cosmetic and health products for the hair and skin. People with diabetes type 2 often have low levels of biotin. Biotin may be involved in the synthesis and release of insulin. Suggest that biotin may help improve blood sugar control in those with diabetes specially type 2 diabetes.

Biotin deficiency is usually seen in the following situations;
  • Eating raw egg whites on a regular basis. (Egg white contains a protein called Avidin that blocks the absorption of biotin).
  • Long-term use of certain anti-seizure medications
  • Prolonged oral antibiotic use (due to changes in intestinal bacteria/flora)
  • Intestinal malabsorption
  • Alcohol consumption may increase the need for biotin.
  • The elderly, athletes, and burn victims may need more biotin than the general population.
Sign and symptoms
  • The first symptoms will be fatigue and loss of energy.
  • Shortness of breath, paleness, lightheadedness and irritability.
  • Chest pain, headache and leg pains (intermittent claudication) can be seen in more severe cases.
